At The Gaia School of Costa Rica we recognize that the health of the planet and the health of people are inextricably connected. We provide a healthy environment free of toxins; we provide healthy, whole, unadulterated food; and we foster healthy relationships and emotional intelligence, all with the goal of creating graduates who know how to create healthy lives for themselves.

Nourishing the Children and The Planet

The food that we provide nourishes the children, their education and the planet. The plant based menu for morning snack and lunch is developed with a deep connection to Mother Nature in mind.

Through gardening, outdoor play and eating times, we aim to foster an appreciation for nature and build the skills necessary to protect it. The children are active in planting. harvesting and preparing whole, local and pesticide free fruits and vegetables from our garden. In the longer term a working Biodynamic Farm will teach the children how to grow and prepare their own food, a life skill necessary to nourish oneself and the planet. A healthy meal, , supports the children's concentration, ability to learn and behavior.

Meal Times

Meal times at school are very important. The community of children, teachers and administrators come together to enjoy the meal. A blessing song is sung to thank Mother Earth for providing the delicious food and in this way an appreciation for this abundance is created.

By all eating the same foods the children learn together to try new things and to look beyond their horizons. Here we are practicing how to create a pleasant atmosphere, through our behavior and table manners and through the way the food is prepared and presented. At the table the children are also practicing cultural behaviors and social skills.

Eat The Rainbow

A wholesome, nutritious plant-based snack and lunch are provided daily. The options include plantbased proteins, such as nuts, seeds, sprouts, , beans and legumes as well as a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables. While there are many healthy ways of eating, research shows that a diet comprised mostly of plants is most sustainable and least impactful on the planet, which is consistent with our school's core values.
